Indonesia spans 17,000 islands across the equator — and scattered across them are some of the world's most distinctive coffee-growing regions. This guide covers every major origin you need to know as a buyer, roaster, or trader.

Sumatra — The Powerhouse

Gayo (Aceh)

Grown at 1,200–1,600 masl in the Gayo highlands of Aceh province. Gayo is Indonesia's most recognized Arabica export. Classic Wet-Hulled (Giling Basah) profile: heavy body, low acidity, cedar, dark chocolate, and earthy mushroom notes. Specialty washed lots score 84–88 SCA. Export port: FOB Belawan (Medan).

Mandheling (North Sumatra)

From the Mandailing Natal, Tapanuli, and Simalungun regions of North Sumatra. Mandheling is the "traditional" Sumatra coffee — deep, full-bodied, herbal, and syrupy. Often more earthy than Gayo. Heavy Wet-Hulled character. FOB Belawan.

Lintong (North Sumatra)

From Lintongnihuta near Lake Toba. Lintong has a cleaner profile than Mandheling — slightly brighter acidity, dried fruit notes, and a more refined earthy quality. Often sold under the "Mandheling" umbrella by larger traders.

Java — History and Heritage

Java coffee has 400+ years of history (Dutch colonial era). Today Java Arabica grows on the slopes of Ijen, Sindoro, and Sumbing volcanoes in East and Central Java. Java Arabica has a distinctive herbal, spicy character unlike Sumatra origins. Java Robusta (Temanggung) is among Indonesia's cleanest Robustas. Export port: FOB Tanjung Priok (Jakarta).

Sulawesi — The Hidden Gem

Toraja

Toraja Arabica grows in the highlands of South Sulawesi (Rantepao and surrounding areas) at 1,400–2,000 masl. The profile: complex, with fruit, dark chocolate, and a distinct savory quality. Lower in acidity than Gayo. Wet-Hulled process dominates. FOB Makassar.

Kalosi

Kalosi is a market name for Arabica from the Enrekang regency of Sulawesi. Similar to Toraja but grown at slightly lower altitude. Often sold blended with Toraja.

Flores — Rising Star

Bajawa (Ngada Regency)

Flores Bajawa Arabica grows on the volcanic slopes of Flores island at 1,200–1,800 masl. The volcanic soil produces a unique profile: medium-full body, bright citric acidity, milk chocolate, and floral (jasmine, clove). Increasingly popular in the EU and Japanese specialty market. FOB Labuan Bajo or transshipped via Makassar/Surabaya.

Bali — Kintamani Highlands

Bali Kintamani Arabica is grown in the caldera of Mount Batur at 1,000–1,500 masl. Distinct clean profile with bright citrus, tangerine, and floral notes. Organic certification available (many Kintamani farmers are Subak Abian cooperatives). FOB Benoa (Denpasar) or via Surabaya. Smaller volumes than Sumatra origins.

Robusta Regions

Lampung (South Sumatra)

Indonesia's largest Robusta region. Heavy, earthy, dark chocolate and wood. The backbone of Italian and Vietnamese espresso blends worldwide. FOB Panjang (Bandar Lampung).

Temanggung (Central Java)

Java Robusta with a cleaner profile than Lampung — rubber, chocolate, slightly nutty. Well-suited for premium espresso blends that want Robusta character without heavy earthiness. FOB Tanjung Priok.
