What is Mandheling Arabica Coffee?

Mandheling Arabica is one of the world's most recognized coffee names, originating from the highlands of North Sumatra — particularly the Mandailing Natal, Tapanuli, and Lintong areas. Grown at 1,000–1,500m altitude and processed using the traditional wet-hull (Giling Basah) method, Mandheling produces an exceptionally heavy-bodied cup with low acidity and complex earthy, chocolatey flavors.

The Giling Basah process — unique to Indonesia — removes the parchment layer at high moisture content, creating the distinctive heavy body and earthy character that sets Sumatra coffees apart. This also produces the characteristic blue-green visual appearance of the raw bean.

Giling Basah (Wet-Hull) — Indonesia's Signature Process:

Coffee cherry is pulped → fermented briefly → washed → then the parchment is removed while the bean is still at 35–50% moisture and sun-dried. This compresses the bean structure and creates the heavy, full body unique to Sumatran coffees.
